‘Land of Gems’ – Manipur is the state of India located in the northeast part of the country rimmed by Nagaland to the north and Mizoram & Myanmar to the south. It perfectly defines the title of “Land of Gems” with its aesthetic & untouched beauty and its economy that mainly relies on natural treasures like agriculture and forestry. Manipur is blessed with beautiful gems of mother nature in the form of lovely landscapes, dense woodlands, lush valleys, and azure lakes that wind in the travelers from various parts of Globe.  

History

Manipur has been named with many titles like Sanna Taipak, Tilli Koktong, Poirier Lam, Meitrack, Matei Lipak, ever since it was ruled by the first popular dictator- King Pakhangba, who ruled the place during 33 A.D. 

In 1891, Manipur was crowned with a title of a princely state under British dominance. In 1972, the place achieved the status of an independent state.

 

Places to Visit

Imphal

Imphal is the capital city of Manipur, located in the heart of the state among the valleys and mountains. Famous for green landscapes, serene surroundings, untouched territories, and rivers, Imphal is a wonderful delight for history lovers also as it was one of the battle sites in World War II.

 

Major attraction: Loktal Lake, State Museum, Sirohi National Park, Shree Govindajee Temple, Red Hill Lokpaching, Matai Garden

Best time: September to April

 

Ukhrul

Ukhrul is an enchanting palace of an exotic array of lilies and a popular tea garden. Parks, peaks, pure streams, and pleasant weather make it a placid place for meditation and relaxation from city distractions.

 

Major attraction: Khayang Peak, Khangkhui Cave, Nillai Tea Estate, Kachou Phung Lake

Best time: April to June

 

Bishnupur

Drawn its name from the renowned Vishnu Temple, Bishnupur is a pilgrimage spot and cultural & religious capital of Manipur. Devotees come to this architecturally beautiful place for the blissful experiences in dome-shaped terracotta temples.

 

Major attraction: Susunia Pahar, Jor Bangla Temple, Panch Ratna, Dal Madol, Vishnu Temple

Best time to visit: September to March

 

Thoubal

Thoubal is a picnic haven for the adventurer enthusiast who loves trekking & hiking in the green meadows and rich flora. Availability of modern-day facilities among the placid lakes & rivers, temples, and Banyan trees on the roadside make it an idle destination to enjoy the blend of urbanity with age-old culture & tradition that radiates out when you take a troll in the beautiful bazaars and landscapes of the place. 

Major attraction: People’s Museum, Imphal River, Louis Lake, Thoubal Bazaar, Ikop Lake

Chandel

Chandel is a small & least populated district that parts India and Myanmar & so also known as Gateway to Myanmar. The presence of numerous tribes in the district adorns the natural beauty of the place with a hueful and distinct culture. Blessed with rare species of animals & birds, ornamental plantation, and different varieties of Orchids, the place is a must-visit to perceive never-seen-before beauty. 

 

Major Attraction: Yangoupokpi-Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary, Tengnoupal, and Moreh

Senapati

Senapati is a natural gem covered with huge greenery for the tree-huggers to seclude themselves in nature’s lap among the hilly landscapes, deep valleys, meandering streams, and soothing rivers. 80% of the area is covered by greenery ousting out the healing energies of woodland and nature. Besides, the rugged terrain offers the adventure-lovers an amazing experience of hiking, trekking, and picnic. 

 

Major Attraction: Purul, Mao, Dzukou Valley, Yangkhullen, Makhel Cave, Sadu Chiru Waterfalls and Maram Khullen

Tamenglong

Popular as “the land of hornbill” Tamenglong is a haven for flora, fauna, and forest-lovers. With the presence of an undiscovered variety of plants & animals in the hilly region, the place set itself out for outdoor vacations in the orchids.

 

Major Attraction: Burning Meadow, Zeilad Lake, and Tharon Cave, Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary, Kisha Khou.

Moirang

Moirang is a petty town that has witnessed wars and outbreaks in the olden days and yet preserved its beauty, serene water bodies, and an array of flora and fauna. The small town in the state of Manipur is an ideal weekend spot to draw oneself from the hectic weekend and gets refreshed & rejuvenated in the natural essence of mother earth.

 

Major Attraction: Loktak Lake, Indian National Army Complex, Sendra Island, Keibul Lamjao National Park, Pakhangba Temple, Loktak Maru Temple, Phubala Village, Ibudhou Thangnarel Temple.
